In 2001 the Deacons of 1^st Presbyterian Church of Wasilla began forming an Interfaith Hospitality

Network or network of churches caring for our Valley homeless families. There was/is no other shelter

available here, homelessness is rampant and the chance to use empty church buildings and volunteers

as in the national model of Family Promise was very exciting. Since opening in 2005, Family Promise

Mat-Su has housed over 90 individuals. Currently the Daycenter and office is also located in 1^st

Presbyterian Church who donates space in the far wing of the facility. 

There are 14 churches currently participating (7 host sites and 7 partners offering volunteers). Church

take turns hosting for a week at a time, caring for the families (no more than 15 individuals at a time)

overnight.  During the day guests go to work, school, or job service, housing offices, etc. The

Daycenter is available for computer searches and as a “base” as families strive to become self-sufficient

again.  There is nothing like the feeling of watching a graduating family walk up the doorsteps of their

very own new apartment! Unless it’s the blessing of having graduated families return to volunteer as

hosts in the program.

Our church, 1^st Presbyterian of Wasilla, has the following upcoming hosting schedule. Please, feel free

to plug in as a volunteer host or to bring a dinner or food items.
